Fareed Zakaria Resigns From Yale University's Governing Board

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) -- A journalist recently accused of plagiarism has resigned from his position on Yale University's governing board to better focus on his work.

The New Haven Register reports (http://bit.ly/OIHJP3) that in a letter to Yale President Richard Levin, Fareed Zakaria said he needed to shed some of his responsibilities as he re-examines his professional life.

Levin thanked Zakaria for his time and service.

Zakaria was suspended this month by Time magazine and CNN for lifting several paragraphs from a New Yorker magazine essay and using them in his Time magazine column. Zakaria apologized, calling it a "terrible mistake."

CNN and Time reinstated Zakaria last week, saying their reviews of his work had shown the lapse was an isolated incident.

I want to be objective with this case. From the one side, I must admit that Fareed is a famous, distinguished, and successful journalist. In the past, he has written many quality and interesting posts. However, his journalistic reliability shall always be under consideration because of these unfortunate faults. I hope that he will come back, start over, successfully recover, and create a new pure name.

So I guess he will have spare time to dedicate to praising the president even more! i always hated this guy. Anytime someone criticized another country or countered him on international affairs, he would throw up the neo-colonial imperialism guilt trip. So pathetic. Now he is a liar!

It's funny that some people see everything as about whether someone is "liberal" or "conservative" in their outlook. That is utter nonsense and says more about the commenter than about the person they're trying to insult. If your view of the world is so skewed, why would anyone listen to your opinion on anything?

As for Zakaria, he's a first-rate journalist with intelligence and common sense. His act of so-called plagiarism was that he neglected to say where he had gotten an idea, not that he lifted someone's exact words. In fact, the words he used were substantially different. But he should clearly have explained where he got the idea from. So, he's wrong about that because of his sloppiness this one time. And apparently after searching, others have concluded that it was a one-time mistake. Big deal? Hardly.

In an online world where nearly EVERY posting is lifted from some other source and reposted and where very few so-called journalists write anything original, it's a bit funny to see this as much of anything. It's of significance to only the most intensely "gotcha" people among the politically-obsessed. Even in the history of writing and scholarship, most ideas are pretty much recycled -- there are very few new ideas out there -- but hopefully attributed to their source. This is a tiny blip compared to Zakaria's lengthy contributions to good journalism.

Actually, I beg to differ with you. There are some parts of the copied material that are somewhat modified to prevent blatant plagiarism. But other portions of the lifted material are nearly word for word -- needlessly. Much of the lifted material did not represent profound insight of the originators work, but factual information. Apparently, his zeal to produce material and to be a "great writer" over-rode his own (assumed) ethics. I feel sorry for him, and have to say that there was some arrogance and ego-mania present, along with likely too many hours being a "great" writer. Chill, Zak.

Sloppiness and flat out plagiarism are two totally different things and Fareed is guilty of the later. Do not confuse what he did! He intentionally stole a work from a colleague and said it was his own. If you believe that is "a first-rate journalist with intelligence and common sense," then shame on you!

Perhaps he needs to ask himself why he did it. He is obviously very bright, educated, articulate.
Was it laziness? Was it just a slight oversight in not citing a source?
Once he understands why, he must be more than careful in not repeating this mistake.

I heard him speak at a meeting of physicians a few years ago. He spoke without notes for an hour, fascinating, brilliant, interesting, knowledgeable of medical issues. I think his recent trouble was probably an isolated incident, not wise, but understandable, for someone with his busy schedule. Let's move on.

Michael Bellisles, winner of Columbia University's prestigious annual book prize, the Bancroft Award, had to give it back. Seems his book, 'Arming America: The Origins of a National Gun Culture' was fraudulent from the get-go.

Harvard's Charles Ogletree was forced to apologize for using content from Yale scholar Jack Balkin's book, 'What Brown v. Board of Education Should Have Said,' in his own book, 'All Deliberate Speed.' Of course, Harvard couldn't have their fair haired scholar (sic) Ogletree be accused of plagarism so it was blamed on oversights and errors on the part of his assistants. And, Harvard's Lawrence Tribe 'inadvertently' allowed passages from Henry J. Abraham's 1974 book, 'Justices and Presidents,' to appear in his book, 'God Save This Honorable Court.'

Of course, Harvard Law School dean, Elena Kagan (name sound familiar?) and Harvard president Larry Summers (another familiar name!), couldn't possibly have that august institution besmirched by plagarism issues so everyone made nice and chalked up such blatant wrongdoings as merely inadvertent misattributions.

And, of course, there are those two best sellers, 'Dreams From My Father,' and, 'Audacity of Hope." Dare we say that another Harvard 'intellectual' may have actually had several ghost writers, inaccuracies, and downright lies?

Say it isn't so- academics (& others) lying, plagerizing, etc.

CNN and anyone affiliated with CNN is worthless as far as I am concerned.
As much as I despise fox, even they have more legitimacy that CNN.

I have deleted all bookmarks to CNN and have not tuned in to their channel in almost a year.
Its over CNN.. I don;t care what you do, I will never return.
Oh, I am a lib by the way.
