It took more than a decade for justice to prevail, and all that time the assailant was right there. Murphysboro, Illinois was the location of the brutal assault and murder of Cindy Pavey, a young mother of two special needs children. Her story was told on the latest installment of "Nightmare Next Door" (Sun., 9 p.m. ET on ID).
Blood and semen samples were collected at the scene of the crime in 1991, but DNA testing at the time didn't provide any good leads for the police. It wasn't until 2008 that they found a match. The entire community was stunned when that evidence led authorities to Quincy Hughes.
Hughes had been a neighbor to the Pavey family for years, even after the assault and murder. The family said discovering it was Hughes made it seem like he'd been mocking the family all these years for having gotten away with this horrific crime against them.
Hughes was sentenced to 30 years in prison.
