Warner Bros. has decided not to adapt Stephen King's The Dark Tower to the screen, Deadline.com reports.

The project was to include three films and a couple of TV miniseries. Ron Howard was reportedly interested in directing the first film, which just received a face lift in the form of a new script from Oscar winner Akiva Goldsman. Goldsman, King and Brian Grazer were on deck to produce. Russell Crowe and Javier Bardem were both attached at one point.

Deadline's Mike Flemming notes that all of this makes Warner Bros. move somewhat curious, especially given the fact that the studio's well is running a little dry in the post-"Potter" and "Batman" world.

What's more is that Warner Bros. is not the first major studio to say "no thanks" to King. Dark Tower was already shopped to NBC/Universal, who balked on account of the project's massive size.

But hope is not lost for King and his (many) fans. Media Rights Capital (MRC) -- the studio behind "Ted" -- is reportedly interested in taking on the project. So it goes.
