Breakups are tough -- especially when they take place in the public eye. But some celebrity splits turn into real-life soap operas, with the drama going on and on and on and eventually eclipsing the time the couple actually spent together.
From Rihanna's never-ending "drama" with Chris Brown (they are really just good friends now, guys!) to the public's wishful thinking that maybe Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston will get back together one day (keep dreaming), some Hollywood relationships get overshadowed by the headline-making breakups.
Check out some stars whose breakups were bigger than their relationships below:
Katie Holmes & Tom Cruise
Their courtship and fairytale wedding were pretty high profile, but since they tied to knot, Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes kept their love low-key. Since announcing their split in June 2012, a media firestorm has surrounded the pair -- and continues to burn. (And probably will forever).
Miley Cyrus & Liam Hemsworth
After meeting on the set of "The Last Song" in 2009, Cyrus and Hemsworth began dating. They got engaged in May 2012, but were constantly surrounded by breakup rumors. Finally, after what seemed like a long time coming, their reps confirmed on Sept. 15, 2013 that they had, in fact, called off their engagement.
Stacy Keibler & George Clooney
It was assumed that after years of being a bachelor, Clooney would finally settle down with his longtime girlfriend Stacy Keibler. But to everyone's surprise (or not?), the pair called it quits in July 2013 after two years of dating.
Jennifer Aniston & Brad Pitt
It was the breakup to end all breakups. In fact, though it's been many years since Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston called it quits, people are still rooting for them to get back together. (And by people, we mean us.) But, Aniston is happily engaged to Justin Theroux, while Pitt is set to marry Angelina Jolie.
Woody Allen & Mia Farrow
Some people might not remember when Woody Allen and Mia Farrow were once a happily married couple, but many people remember when Allen left Farrow to be with their adopted daughter. Yep, that's a pretty bad breakup story, if we've ever heard one.
Julianne Hough & Ryan Seacrest
Say it ain't so! When Seacrest and Hough announced their split, shock echoed around the world. The pair, who began dating in 2010, called it quits in spring of 2013 ... and it was unexpected.
Michelle Williams & Jason Segel
Although their romance was short-lived, when Williams and Segel announced their split in Feb. 2013, it was a sad, sad time for a lot of fans. Why, you may ask? Well, just look at them together!
Taylor Swift & Harry Styles
Although they didn't date for long, every Swift breakup is a big one -- especially when she's dating a One Direction star. Swift and Styles called it quits in early 2013 ... and it shocked Directioners and Swift's cat Meredith.
Robert Pattinson & Kristen Stewart
Oof, this one hurt. After Stewart's cheating scandal rocked the world in the summer of 2012, Pattinson and his longtime love finally called it quits earlier this year.
Selena Gomez & Justin Bieber
REMEMBER THEM? The young lovebirds, who dated for two years, called it quits in November 2012. And Jelena was no longer a term used in celebrity news.
Rihanna & Chris Brown
It may be hard to remember when they actually dated, but it's harder to forget how they broke up. Rihanna and Chris Brown's split led to a felony assault charge against Brown, and while they have both moved on, rumors that they continue to hook up don't seem to stop.
Kris Humphries & Kim Kardashian
Their marriage may have lasted only 72 days, but Kim Kardashian and Kris Humphries' divorce lasted way longer. Don't worry though, it's finally over -- and Kim recently welcomed baby North with boyfriend Kanye West.
Heidi Klum & Seal
After renewing their wedding vows year after year since 2005, Klum and Seal announced their split in January 2012 to everyone's surprise.
Jesse James & Sandra Bullock
Many people scratched their heads when America's sweetheart Sandra Bullock married motorcycle man Jesse James, but everyone was heartbroken for Sandy when his scandalous affairs became public knowledge. It's a breakup worthy of an Oscar, that's for sure.
Tiger Woods & Elin Nordegren
Tiger Woods and Eli Nordegren didn't make too many headlines when they were married -- until the golfer's infamous extramarital antics hit the news. It's one breakup that won't be forgotten anytime soon.
Gabriel Aubry & Halle Berry
Halle Berry's ongoing court battle with her ex and the father of her daughter, Gabriel Aubry, turned so nasty that it's hard to remember when these two were actually happy together. Still, Berry is overjoyed now and currently expecting her second child, her first with husband Olivier Martinez.
Kelsey Grammer & Camille Grammer
A divorce is never easy, but it's even worse when it goes down on reality TV. Kelsey Grammer moved on from wife Camille -- star of "The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills" -- well before divorce papers were filed. Harsh, man.
Oksana Grigorieva & Mel Gibson
It was the voicemail messages that shocked Hollywood, shooting Mel Gibson and Oksana Grigorieva's troubled relationship into the spotlight.
Brooke Mueller & Charlie Sheen
It has always been a rollercoaster ride when it comes to Charlie Sheen and Brooke Mueller's relationship, but it's their personal lives that make headlines.
Vanessa Hudgens & Zac Efron
The ultimate teen couple before Jelena began (and ended): Hudgens and Efron met on the set of "High School Musical" in 2005 and dated until December 2010. When they broke up, fans everywhere were shocked.
