Hurricane Isaac was upgraded from a tropical storm to a Category 1 hurricane on Tuesday, threatening to pound parts of the Gulf Coast with winds in excess of 75 mph and up to 20 inches of rain.
"We don't expect a Katrina-like event, but remember there are things about a Category 1 storm that can kill you," Mitch Landrieu, the mayor of New Orleans said, according to the Associated Press.
In anticipation of the storm, evacuations have been ordered in low-lying parts of Mississippi and Louisiana, NBC News reports. According to Reuters, several hundred U.S. Army National Guard troops are on hand around New Orleans.
Although the storm has yet to make landfall, people in the storm's path have already uploaded videos of the weather conditions to YouTube. (Some of the clips are available below.)
Over the weekend, Isaac -- then still a tropical storm -- was responsible for at least 29 deaths in Haiti and the Dominican Republic, according to the Associated Press.
