Ron Paul Delegates Cause Mayhem At Republican Convention

TAMPA, Fla. -- A divided Republican Party was on full display Tuesday when Rep. Ron Paul's (R-Texas) supporters and other grassroots activists loudly booed House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) on the first full day of the Republican National Convention.

The fight was over the unglamorous rules process that dictates how delegates are apportioned in each state. Paul didn't sweep the ballot boxes in state caucuses and primaries, but his supporters quietly worked behind the scenes in an effort to take control of state parties and delegate assignments.

The RNC's rules committee adopted provisions that would bar this sort of insurgent takeover from happening in the future: Convention delegates would be bound to vote for the candidate who won statewide at the ballot box.

In other words, when there is a statewide popular vote, if the result is not winner-take-all, each candidate must get delegates in proportion to their percentage of the popular vote. The rule was proposed and pushed through the committee by lieutenants loyal to Romney. Some Republicans, including ones loyal to Romney, opposed the rule change, arguing it hurt grassroots activism.

Twenty Paul backers from Maine were also stripped of their spots as official delegates after the RNC concluded that their election was invalid.

On Tuesday afternoon, House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) called for a full delegation vote on the rules, including the ones the Paul backers opposed. The voice vote of ayes and nays were equal in volume, but Boehner immediately gave it to the ayes, leading to loud boos and shouts from Paul supporters.

The dismissed Maine delegation was easy to spot on Tuesday. They were all wearing white baseball caps that read "Maine 2012" and had a picture of Paul. Before the vote on the rules, Paul supporters would frequently interrupt the proceedings with shouts of "Seat them now" (referring to the Maine delegation), "We were robbed," "President Paul" and "Point of order."

After the vote, Paul supporters took to the hallways outside the main convention area and continued shouting and talking to reporters about how they believed they were robbed. Several of them said they may not support Romney -- and it could cause problems for Republicans in the fall.

"After the way they treated us, treated the state of Maine, treated us Republicans, they should be worried about how this is going to affect the election," said Erin Gail, a stripped Maine delegate.

"This is a sign this man [Romney] will take our country down a much worse path than the guy who is currently in office. And I can't stand the guy who is currently in office," said John Jones, another rejected Maine delegate.

Paul is with his backers, all the way. He is not speaking at the convention this year, because he denied the RNC's two conditions: that he allow his remarks to be vetted by RNC officials and that he fully endorse Romney.

“It wouldn't be my speech,” Paul told The New York Times. "That would undo everything I've done in the last 30 years. I don't fully endorse him for president."

On Tuesday, Paul told Fox News host Neil Cavuto that he was "undecided" on whether he would vote for Romney.

Gladys Lemley, an alternate delegate from West Virginia who is backing Romney -- although she originally supported Newt Gingrich -- agreed with the Paul delegates that the divide in the GOP could hurt the party in November. She said she wished the Paul backers would join with other Republicans and focus on defeating Obama.

"By now, we need to unify the Republican Party and go after Obama. He is our enemy, not members of the Republican Party," she said.

When asked whether it could help Democrats win in November, she added, "It could. I remember back when Ross Perot ran. It hurt the Republican Party."

Uh......he sure didn't look humble, Christian OR honest when he CHEATED and LIED at the RNC by reading the vote from the teleprompter. I am leaving the Republican Party this week and I have been a life-long Republican. I'm also calling Bohner's office to register a SHARP complaint. I hope someone nails him for this. Whether you like Ron Paul or not isn't the point...this was an attack on those struggling to be good citizens while trying to work enough jobs to stay afloat...the single parent...the self educated...the revolutionary...the true patriot. Republicans have made it clear that they are not a party of change OR of the common man...but instead a party of the status quo. They have no use of you unless you have big bucks or fall in line with the party elite. Only time will tell what this means in the grand scheme of things...part of me wants to believe that this will signal the death knell of this degenerate gaggle and bring forth a third party worthy of the conservative moniker. For you see...we Libertarians don't need to kill the Republican Party. She is already terminally ill...all that is required is to pull the plug...walk away...and let her succumb to the diseases of corruption and hubris. I will not vote for Romney or Obama and it really doesn't matter because both men are ignorant fools and neither has the ability to turn this nation from the course upon which it set...four years with one will be no different than four years with the other. Might just be that Romney and Company have just thrown the very election they've been spending so much money to win.

The Republican Party ceased to the party of the people decades ago. However, with this sophomoric and heavy handed sidelining of Ron Paul they have, in point of fact, only succeeded in nullifying the effect of grassroots activism. This means that those who seek true change...the most active and dedicated members of the party...will leave and take their talents, as well as their votes, elsewhere. What people fail to realize is that the rules for nomination exist as they do to allow motivated minority viewpoints to be recognized by the party at large. In doing so, a party might gradually be changed such a the rock that is buffeted by the sea over time. Finally...the faux conservatives have shed the last vestiges of commonality with Joe Q. Public and become the political party of snobs. Nothing could be more anti-middle class than marginalizing a strong and energetic grassroots candidate and his followers.

A common theme in the comments here is that Ron Paul supporters have no right to expect anything different from the Republican Party. Of course, this also applies to the Democratic Party. The answer would seem to be find some means other than the political system to change the form of government, would it not? I think many are misunderstanding what happened in Maine... All of Maine did not back Ron Paul, yet the delegates got together and decided they wanted him, so they ignored their constituents and all supported Ron Paul... Now if that isn't underhanded and shady, I don't know what is... They did this to themselves, and others... They hurt their party choice, not the republicans...

I think you've missed the point of a caucus state. Much like the way we vote for congressmen and women to represent us in government, citizens of caucus states vote for individuals to represent them at the RNC to vote for the individual they feel is right for this country. None of the delegates are bound to vote for either candidate in Maine. Maine held their caucus all the way back in January with 39.2% going to Romney and 35.7% going to Paul of the Popular vote. Much has changed since then(Plenty of bad publicity about Romney) causing many to turn away from Romney. Having the vote locked in before say Romney releases his tax forms is the main reason the caucus states work this way. Should a candidate drop out, or we find out has done one of the most despicable things on the planet do you still want your vote going to him?

I think you are misunderstanding EVERYTHING that happened in Maine. Paul lost to Romney by only 200 votes. 3 counties were not counted. Those were counties that Paul had won the popular vote in 2008. Why were those counties not counted, especially when difference in the winners was only 200 votes. Don't tell me that Paul supporters ignored the Maine Voters. The GOP ignored Maine voters in 3 counties. Now if THAT isn't underhanded and shady, I don't know what is.

While I'm not a fan of Ron Paul, I do support free speech. For the Romney/Ryan campaign to first attempt to strong-arm Ron Paul "that he gave a speech pre-approved by Romney's campaign, and that he give a "full-fledged" endorsement of Mitt Romney.

And then to try to silence his rivals supporters? Romney/Ryan might talk about being bipartisan, but, when it comes to someone in their own party who refuses to bow down to them - the lengths they will go to, to silence them and anyone else who dares to oppose them!

Just think what he has planned for the rest of us, if this is how he treats one of his own.

As for myself, I'm a Democrat who is voting Democrat. I am also an American. This behavior is un-American. Ron Paul supporters have a voice, I don't agree with their political position, and I'm guessing they don't agree with mine - but I hope we are agreed that if a right to an opinion, to declare their vote, in something so important as a national convention, whatever the party, is not encouraged, supported or respected, in the end, we all lose. All of us.

Obama has proven himself to be ineffective, and a socialist. He will not get my vote again.

But I will not reward the Republicans. The republican party must lose this election, Romney will be 10 times worse than Obama, and will plunge this country into more hopelessness.

The only person that can save this country is Dr.Paul, the man is a real life hero, Both of these cowards (obama & romney) wish they had half the integrity this man has. But I guess it doesn't matter, they both have the corporate money, they both have their respective "news" outlets in pocket.

"Socialist" is no longer something that can't coexist with "corporatist". Obama is both, and Romney is really both, too. Individual rights no longer matter; big government must control every aspect of the people's lives, for the benefit of 'the whole' but also for the benefit of the elite rich who have decided that what's best for the whole is that they get all the power and resources and will dole out just enough to the people to keep them alive and grateful.

Why isn't the so-called "liberal media" airing this disingenuous behavior by the RNC? Two separate voice votes had equal volumes on both sides of the electorate issue, but Boehner and Prebus called them as passing "without objection". The RNC is literally stealing votes from itself!

Stealing votes is the only way they can possibly win anyway in November, so they probably need all the practice they can get.

I agree; we all know that they are capable of steeling votes which is what they have done in the past. But we have to make sure they don't get away with it this time.
