CBS News Uses Unconventional Approach To Protect Navy SEAL Identity

CBS News took an unconventional approach to protect the identity of the Navy SEAL who penned the book about the killing of Osama bin Laden. The Navy SEAL sat down with "CBS Evening News" anchor Scott Pelley for an exclusive "60 Minutes" interview.

The book was published under the pseudonym, Mark Owen. Last week, Fox News said it had identified Owen's real identity. The Associated Press later confirmed the report.

Pelley teased the interview on Thursday's "CBS This Morning." He told hosts Charlie Rose and Norah O'Donnell that the production called some of Hollywood's most talented makeup artists to disguise the SEAL's identity for the interview.

Pelley told O'Donnell that she would be "astonished" by how much Owen does not look like the person who appears on camera. Pelley added that he had multiple meetings with Owen before taping the interview, but did not recognize him when he walked out on set.

"It's an astounding transformation," Pelley said. "It doesn't look anything like he really looks."

The book, titled "No Easy Day," was originally set for a September 11th release date. The release was moved up to the week of Sept. 4.
