John Sununu Claims Gay Marriage Is Too 'Complicated' To Discuss In Interview

The outspoken and often combative former New Hampshire governor and Mitt Romney surrogate John Sununu is rarely at a loss for words while discussing the GOP presidential nominee’s positions.

But a federal marriage amendment, which Romney supports and which would ban marriage for gays and lesbians in the U.S. Constitution, was too “complicated” to discuss in a brief radio interview, Sununu said on Wednesday, but he’d be “happy” to get “two cases of beer, and sit down and talk about it.”

Asked at the Republican National Convention in Tampa, Fla., to respond to both the Republican Party’s platform, which calls for a constitutional amendment and Romney’s personal position, Sununu said the issue is “much more complicated” than a “two-sentence” answer could encompass.

“I've got be honest with you, I haven’t seen the platform,” Sununu first responded in an interview for my radio program on Sirius XM OutQ. “I’ve been so busy on chairing the rules committee. So I don’t want to make a technical mistake.”

Told what the platform says about marriage equality, he replied, “I think there are some issues that need national respect but I really do think that states ought to be dealing with this until there is a resolution at the national level.”

“I don’t want to get into a debate on this thing," said Sununu when asked to elaborate. "It is much more complicated than just throwing a couple of answers into a radio interview. So I’m going to pass on it.”

Asked specifically about Romney's position, Sununu said: “If you tell me it’s in the platform, I’m going to believe you. If it’s in the platform, it’s in the platform. I’m not going to discuss this issue on the radio. It’s much more complicated. If you want to buy two cases of beer, and sit down and talk about it, I’m happy to do so. But there are some places that deserve more than a hackneyed, two-sentence answer.”
