Hurricane Isaac Victims Pay What They Can At New Orleans Restaurant, Slim Goodies Diner

While Isaac continues to rage through the Gulf Coast, one New Orleans restaurant is pretty much business as usual. It’s serving up comfort food to customers, but letting diners pay whatever they can afford.

Slim Goodies, a down-home diner in the New Orleans Garden District, was the first resto to open its doors after Katrina tore through the city, and it’s keeping up its tradition of quickly returning to feeding storm victims, HLN reports. The Gulf Coast’s latest hurricane has claimed at least four lives in Louisiana and Mississippi, according to the Associated Press, and Slim Goodies is working to fill up locals braving the heavy rainfall with goodwill (and lots of eggs and coffee).

"It's kind of like a big party," restaurant owner Kappa Horn told the news outlet. "Everyone knows that whenever there’s a storm that Slim's will be open the next day."

Hungry residents have been snaking around the block and are are greeted with the sign: “For free food, we have that,” once they get in. After diners finish eating, they're just asked to put $5 in a bucket, or another amount they feel comfortable giving.

“Thank you for restoring the hope and faith and humanity back,” one fan wrote on the Slim Goodies Facebook page, “what a blessing this place is!!!
