We spend lots of time focusing on what stars wear (and any wardrobe malfunctions they may have), but what about what they put on their faces? Although makeup may not seem important, different kinds of makeup styles have now come to mean different things, socially and politically and plenty of women won't leave home without it.

In a survey, two-thirds of British women said that heading to the office bare-faced caused them more stress than public speaking, going on a first date or enduring a job interview. 91 percent of women surveyed would rather cancel a first date altogether than go without makeup on. And in the U.S., women spend around $7 billion on cosmetics every year.

And that doesn't even include hair. The AP recently reported that in 1950, about seven percent of women dyed their hair. Today? 95 percent or more.

With all that beauty-obsession (and our own love of makeup) in mind, we're taking a look at This Week In Beauty. From this week forward, we'll be showcasing the best, worst and most interesting styles of hair, makeup and nails that we came across this week. Take a look, get inspired and vote for your faves!

  • BEST: Kate Hudson

Kate Hudson looked stunning as she attended the photocall for "The Reluctant Fundamentalist" for the 69th Venice International Film Festival on August 29th. Apart from looking gorgeous in a white suit, Hudson looked fresh and ethereal with simple, wavy locks and bronze makeup. We love how Hudson offset her nude lips with strong mascara and warm cheeks. • WORST: Miranda Kerr

We were shocked to see the usually perfect Miranda Kerr looking a little red-faced at the David Jones AMEX press conference in Sydney on August 30th. The Victoria's Secret model's sexy red lips clashed with her red eyeshadow and pink cheeks. We like it when Miranda goes more natural and adds a pop of red for a refined and casual look. Next time, Miranda! (Getty photo)

  • BEST: Carrie Underwood

We loved the country singer's casual look at the #1 Awards in Nashville on August 28th. Underwood looked amazing in orange and we love her playful star necklace which helped play down her dramatic eyes and sexy tousled hair. (Getty photo)

  • WORST: Nicole Richie

Nicole Richie chose to don a simple but elegant look at the launch of her new "Nicole" fragrance at Macy's on August 29th. Although the reality-tv-star-turned-designer looked radiant in a bronze tan (and bronze hair/makeup), there was something odd about her eye makeup. Her left false eyelash was peeling off and it didn't look very good. (Getty photo)

  • BEST: Lucy Lawless

The "Xena" star looked gorgeous at the LA premiere of "The Possession" on August 28th. Although her outfit confused us a little bit (pink dress, purple tights?), we love Lawless's messy up-do and soft but sexy makeup. (Getty photo)

  • WORST: Padma Lakshmi

We were surprised to see Padma Lakshmi looking shiny at the "Alyse Kenny...It's A Charity Thing!" fundraiser in NYC on August 29th. The "Top Chef" host dropped her normally glam look for more casual beauty choices, no lipstick and barely any eye makeup. We would have liked to she Padma with at least a little bit of lipstick! • BEST: Winona Ryder

We were happy to see the normally MIA Winona Ryder at "The Iceman" photocall at the 69th Venice Film Festival on August 30th. The actress looked sophisticated in black with a simple up-do and smokey eyeshadow. We love the color of her lipstick that rounds out the actress' chic and sexy look. (Getty photo)

  • WORST: Julia Stiles

Julia Stiles looked very orange at the opening night party of 'Heartless' in New York City on August 27th. The actress looked like she either put on too much foundation or not enough. We would have suggested going with a smoldering smoky eye and a different colored lipstick. (Getty photo)

  • BEST: Laetita Casta

Laetita Casta looked amazing at the "Venezia 69" Jury photocall at the Venice International Film Festival on August 29th. We love the actress/model's sweet and simple look that manages to look sun-kissed and not washed out. Casta went with a soft wavy 'do and pink cheeks with a sweet pink lip. Love it! (Getty photo)

  • WORST: Florence Welch

We love Florence Welch's goddess-like style and her fiery red hair, but we didn't love her beauty look at the 69th Venice Film Festival on August 30th. Welch looked chic in a fabulous printed outfit, but we thought she looked a little washed out in terms of her makeup. We understand that Welch doesn't need very much to make her look gorgeous (those cheekbones!) but we would have liked to see her try a darker shade of lipstick. (Getty photo)
