Vanity Fair’s controversial cover story chronicling a search for potential wives for Tom Cruise reportedly conducted by high-ranking Scientology officials in 2004 has resulted in others coming forward to claim they know people on the Cruise wife audition list -- which is said to have included Scarlett Johansson and even Lindsay Lohan.

“Lindsay met with Tom before he met Katie,” a source very close to Lohan reveals. “At first, she was super excited to work with Tom and thought it was about a role in 'Mission Impossible.' It soon became clear that he wasn’t looking for an actress but something very different.”

Lindsay’s father Michael Lohan, who has no formal role in his daughter’s career, told me he knows nothing about the meeting with Cruise. “Tom has never called me to ask for her hand in marriage," he added.

“Another actress that was being considered was Scarlett,” the same insider reveals. “The whole thing was very strange.”

Scarlett’s spokesperson confirmed that the actress did meet with Tom and producers around the time in question, but says it was for a role in one of the "Mission Impossible" films.

Ultimately, in April 2005, it was Katie Holmes who was the "winner." She left New York to meet with Tom and was not seen again for more than two weeks before appearing in Rome as Tom’s girlfriend. Shortly after that appearance, she fired her longtime manager and publicist, and stopped associating with old friends until her marriage abruptly ended after seven years.

A rep for Tom denies the Vanity Fair report, saying, “Lies in a different font are still lies -- designed to sell magazines.”
