Bradley Cooper Talks Addiction, 8-Year Sobriety

Bradley Cooper Talks History Of Addiction

Bradley Cooper may play the part of the put-together leading man now, but that wasn't always the case. The "Hangover" star opened up about his dark past in the September 14 issue of The Hollywood Reporter, revealing a previous life of addiction.

"I was at a party and deliberately bashed my head on the concrete floor -- like, 'Hey, look how tough I am!' And I came up, and blood dripped down," Cooper remembers of a substance-induced stunt he once pulled. "And then I did it again. I spent the night at St. Vincent's Hospital with a sock of ice, waiting for them to stitch me up."

It's hard to imagine the dapper (and bilingual!) actor, who recently split from the elegant Zoe Saldana, who is his forthcoming "The Words" co-star, as a real-life "Hangover" type -- it was difficult for even Cooper to come to terms with where his life was headed.

Finally, after thinking "Wow, I'm actually going to ruin my life; I'm really gonna ruin it," at the age of 29, Cooper decided to give up the stuff for good.

"I don't drink or do drugs at all anymore," Cooper, 37, tells THR. "Being sober helps a great deal."

It certainly has. Ever since his role in 2005's "Wedding Crashers," Cooper has shot to A-list status, landing lead roles in blockbusters like "The A-Team," "Limitless" and the forthcoming "Hit and Run."
