Tom Cruise Vanity Fair Covers: A Look Back At The Actor's Relationship With The Magazine

Tom Cruise's Long History With Vanity Fair

He made his Vanity Fair debut 23 years ago on a cover emblazoned with the phrase,"The Big Surprise." Five years later he opened up about "Sex, marriage and romancing the vampire," and in 1996 he set the cover ablaze to promote "Mission Impossible."

Four years later, Cruise was back on the cover showing off his guns in a sultry pose photographed by Annie Leibovitz before taking it all off for his fifth cover in 2002. And for Cruise's last two covers, he had to share the prime real-estate spot -- first with fellow A-listers in the 2003 "Hollywood Issue" and again when he debuted baby daughter Suri alongside now ex-wife Katie Holmes in October 2006.

But after the magazine's latest Cruise coverage, he may not be so willing to pose for the coveted cover. The magazine published an expose on Cruise's alleged wife-auditioning process -- a story which the actor's attorney later called "long, boring and false."
