'Very Bad Men': The BTK Killer Murdered Charlie Otero's Family (VIDEO)

Charlie Otero Speaks Out About The BTK Killer On 'Very Bad Men'

Charlie Otero's story unfolded on "Very Bad Men," but it wasn't Otero who was bad. He was the victim of the notorious BTK Killer, later identified as Dennis Rader. Otero was a teenager when he came home to find his parents and two of his siblings brutally murdered.

"I was a devout Catholic alter boy, and the instant I saw my mother, I lost all faith in God," Otero admitted. What followed was a personal downward spiral that saw him lose touch with his remaining siblings, and even wind up in a New Mexico prison.

It was decades before Rader was finally caught and identified. Otero was in the courtroom, and said that he wanted to lunge across the courtroom and kill Rader himself. But then, he got a phone call that changed everything for him. His son had been hit by a car and was in a coma.

“I could not ask God to do me a favor ... and bless me with his life," he said of his son, "If I’m trying to commit this evil.” His son survived and Rader was sentenced in 2005 to ten consecutive life sentences.

Otero has since reconnected with his two daughters and remaining siblings. He's also rediscovered his belief in both people and his faith.

"Very Bad Men" reveals true crime stories every Thursday at 10 p.m. ET on ID.
