Los hispanos añoran a Rafael Nadal y sólo por esta vez que él no está en el US Open, sus corazones están divididos en las preferencias entre el serbio Novak Djokovic, que lleva la delantera frente a los otros semifinalistas, el español David Ferrer y el británico Andy Murray.
"Rafa" Nadal es nuestro favorito pero ahora le vamos a Djokovic", dijo Fernando Sánchez, fanático mexicano que viajó juntos a sus hijos desde el estado de Campeche, para estar en las instancias finales del abierto estadounidense.
"Djokovic ganará el US Open, pero otra sería la historia si hubiese estado Nadal aquí", insiste Sánchez.
Su hijo Juan Fernando considero que, "Puede haber una sorpresa. Los españoles tienen mucha picardía y David Ferrer es un jugador con mucha garra y puede tumbar al más pintado".
Los hispanos en Estados Unidos mayoritariamente prefieren y practican el fútbol -soccer- a otros deportes, no obstante la popularidad del tenis entre ellos sigue creciendo y eso se lo puede advertir entre los miles de fanáticos que asisten al US Open que se juega en Flushing Meadows Nueva York.
Otro fanático que pronosticó el triunfo de Djokovic fue Juan Pablo Díaz, mexicano residente en el Bronx, Nueva York.
"El serbio es mI favorito de plano. Después de Federer es el mejor jugador. No creo que Murray lo pueda derrotar".
Joel Toro junto a su esposa Recheln vinieron desde Puerto Rico para ver los partidos desde cuartos de final.
"Es una lástima que no esté Nadal, su presencia se extraña, el Open es otra cosa sin él. Ahora estamos animando a Ferrer, quisiéramos que gane, pero lo veo difícil. Djokovic es mi candidato".
La esposa de Joel no coincide con ese pronóstico y cree que Murray será el nuevo rey del US Open y su segunda opción es el español Ferrer.
Novak Djokovic es el campeón defensor del abierto de Estados Unidos. El serbio era número 1 del mundo el 2011 y derrotó en la final a Rafael Nadal por 6-2, 6-4, 6-7 (7-3) y 6-1
De acuerdo a la Asociación de Tenis de Estados Unidos (USTA) en la edición del US Open 2011 casi 800 mil espectadores se dieron asistencia durante las dos semanas que dura el torneo, de los cuales más de una cuarta, se estimó, fueron hispanos.
Otros fanáticos que opinaron sobre los finalistas fueron Esteban Ramírez y Agustín Mendoza, quienes viajaron desde Venezuela para asistir a las semifinales y finales de hombres y mujeres del último Grand Slam del año.
"El claro ganador de este año es Djokovic. Como latinoamericanos hubiésemos querido que esté Juan Martín del Potro o Nadal, pero él no jugó", dijo Ramírez.
De su parte su compatriota Mendoza va por el británico Andy Murray.
"Me encanta el juego aguerrido de Murray, es el actual campeón olímpico y ha tenido una temporada extraordinaria. Seguro él ganará", insistió Mendoza.
Durante la última década, jugadores latinoamericanos han sido grandes animadores del circuito internacional de la ATP.
Entre los que dieron grandes satisfacciones se citan al ecuatoriano Nicolás Lapentti, que llegó a ser séptimo del mundo, los chilenos Nicolás Massú y Fernando González, el brasileño Guga Kuerten y el peruano Luis Horna.
Argentina es el país que más jugadores tiene entre los grandes, Juan Martín del Potro, es el latinoamericano número 1 y entre otros de esa nacionalidad están David Nalbandian, Leonardo Mayer, Juan Mónaco y Juan Ignacio Chela.
