Kirk Cameron Blames Anti-Gay Controversy On Liberal Press

Kirk Cameron Blames 'Liberal Press' For Media Firestorm Over Anti-Gay Remarks

Once again expressing solidarity with Missouri Congressman Todd Akin, Kirk Cameron has blamed the media firestorm over his controversial remarks on homosexuality earlier this year on the "liberal press."

In a new interview with Naples News, the 41-year-old former "Growing Pains" star spoke at length about the backlash he experienced after he referred to homosexuality as "unnatural" and "detrimental, and ultimately destructive to so many of the foundations of civilization" in a March appearance on CNN's "Piers Morgan Tonight."

Asked if he had any regrets about his comments, Cameron noted, "If Piers Morgan were truly concerned about the homosexual community, concerned with people being hurt, he could have eliminated that section, like he did many other parts of our conversation."

Still, he acknowledged, "That's not to say there's not a better way of saying something. I think Todd Akin would agree with that."

Cameron is currently promoting his 35-city "Love Worth Fighting For" tour, which has been described as a "mass marriage-counseling event." He says, "During these Love Worth Fighting For events, we focus on all areas of personal and spiritual relationships and truly seek to help people in all stages of life — from teenagers, and single adults to newly married couples and longtime spouses."

Still, that tour hasn't been without some controversy. After 17-year-old Corey Bernstein, who serves as co-chair of the Youth Caucus at Garden State Equality, invited Cameron to meet with him and other members of the local lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community during the tour's New Jersey stop, the actor declined through his manager.

"I promise you [Kirk's] goal is not one of trying to hurt people in any way, in fact it is just the opposite," Mark Craig wrote in an emailed response. "He has a concern for their well being -- not only now, but eternally."
