Eugene Mirman Comedy Festival Enters 5th Year

Posted: Updated:

Tonight, the best ironic-comedy-festival-but-also-real-comedy-festival known to man, the Eugene Mirman Comedy Festival, begins its fifth year in Brooklyn. For four nights, audiences at the Bell House and Union Hall will enjoy shows and events curated by Mirman, a stalwart presence in the New York comedy scene.

The fest kicks off tonight with "We Appreciate Ourselves: The Five Year Anniversary Celebration of the Eugene Mirman Comedy Festival" at the Bell House. The show is sold out, but an after party, presented by Karaoke Killed the Cat, is open to the public.

Oh, and there will be a VIP Herring Room.

Other stand-up shows this weekend include, "This Is The Night These Comics Get Discovered and Become Stars!", "Uh Oh: Dangerous, Inappropriate Comedy For Teenagers," and "Comedians Two to Five Years Away From Their Own TV Shows." All shows are either at the Bell House or Union Hall, both located in Gowanus.

The fest is also presenting a resurrected version of Invite Them Up, a now-defunct weekly comedy show in New York that regularly featured comedians such as Zach Galifianakis, David Cross and Aziz Ansari. The show will be hosted by original host Bobby Tisdale.

A live version of the popular podcast StarTalk with Neil deGrasse Tyson will go up on Saturday. This year, Tyson will invite Sarah Silverman to talk about astrophysics (cool).

Last year, a highlight of the festival was a version of The Talent Show, hosted by Elna Baker and Kevin Townley. If this year's presentation of Baker and Townley's show is half as entertaining as watching an extremely intoxicated Ira Glass stumble around the stage for an hour, it will be a blast. Rachel Maddow also made a guest appearance on The Talent Show last year, so the surprise drop-ins can be expected.

HuffPost Comedy will be covering the festival, so keep an eye on this page and our Twitter for updates.

Comedians scheduled to appear at the festival are Sarah Silverman, Todd Barry, Jon Glaser, John Mulaney, Dave Hill, Daniel Kitson, Michael Che, Jena Friedman, Matt McCarthy, Nick Turner, Damien Lemon, Brooke Van Poppelen, Brent Sullivan, Tom Shillue, Jacqueline Novak, Greg Johnson, Stuckey & Murray, Hari Kondabolu, Brandon Small, Ben Kronberg, Craig Baldo, James Patterson, Elna Baker, Kevin Townley and Mark Oppenheimer.
