Washington Irving's famous tales, "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" and "Rip Van Winkle" are full of memorable folk characters. These illustrious characters may explain why Irving's tales have been adapted for the big screen time and time again.

So it is interesting to take a look back at the art that was originally included in "The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent," the collection of essays in which these stories were first published.
