The job of a presidential campaign surrogate is relatively simple: take the campaign's message on a given subject and amplify it. Staying on message, however, can be unexpectedly difficult.

Senator Rob Portman was the latest casualty of imperfect message discipline: as he defended the Romney campaign from attacks over its reaction to embassy attacks in Libya and Egypt, he acknowledged Romney's reaction was based on an incorrect timeline of the attacks.
