Pearlie Mae Jones, Texas Widow, Sues Cemetery That Allegedly Misplaced Her Husband's Remains

Elderly widow Pearlie Mae Jones alleges the Cedar Hill Memorial Park in Mansfield, Texas, lost her deceased husband's remains -- and is asking her for extra money to find them.

Jones is suing. She says the cemetery buried her husband in the wrong plot, then placed his headstone on an empty plot and later refused to determine exactly where he is buried, CBS Dallas-Fort Worth reports. A lawyer for Jones contends that the cemetery admitted responsibility when it later offered the mistaken plot to another Jones family member. But that offer only came after the cemetery asked for $1,500 to find the missing remains of Pearlie's husband.

“How could they put the tombstone in the right place,” said Jones, who worries that her own time will soon come, “and they couldn’t put him in the right place?”

Sadly, cases of mistaken burial aren’t all that rare. This summer, legal trouble also ensued in Jackson County, Ala., when a man was buried in the wrong plot, according to WAFF. Those reports emerged around the same time that a cemetery in Westland, Mich., buried a young mother in a plot that wasn't meant for her, according to Fox 2 Detroit.

Pearlie Jones's family just wants her case settled. “We need closure -- that’s all my family wants ... just closure,” grandson Tavara Jones told CBS Dallas-Fort Worth.
