Alyson Hannigan Says They're Waiting For Chelsea Handler To Be 'The Mother' On 'How I Met Your Mother' (VIDEO)

Alyson Hannigan Jokes That Chelsea Handler Is The 'HIMYM' 'Mother'

For seven seasons now, the big question for anyone associated with "How I Met Your Mother" has been "Who is the mother?" Alyson Hannigan dropped by "Chelsea Lately" to talk about the long-running series' eighth season, and of course the question came up again. But this time, Hannigan had an answer. Probably not the answer, but an answer.

"I think they’re just waiting for your availability," she told Chelsea Handler. "Yes, you can be the mom!”

"No, I can’t be the mother! That’s so insulting. Of you guys?" Handler said, misunderstanding the situation entirely. For the record, Handler is 37, while he cast ranges from age 30 (Cobie Smulders) to age 39 (Neil Patrick Harris).

Josh Radnor is 38, so casting her as "the mother" in the true sense of being the mother of Ted's children would be reasonable in that regard. Unfortunately, that's not how Handler read the implication.

"My head’s in the wrong place," she admitted. "I always think everybody’s calling me old."

The eighth -- and possibly last, if the creators have anything to say about it -- season of "How I Met Your Mother" kicks off Monday, September 24 at 8 p.m. ET on CBS. "Chelsea Lately" airs weeknights at 11 p.m. ET on E!

TV Replay scours the vast television landscape to find the most interesting, amusing, and, on a good day, amazing moments, and delivers them right to your browser.
