'Glee' Takes On Britney Spears' Very Public Breakdown In Latest Tribute Episode (VIDEO)

'Glee' Takes On Britney Spears' Public Breakdown

While the first Britney Spears episode of "Glee" was a tribute to the singer's legacy and influence on young performers, for "Britney 2.0," the writers took a darker exploration into her very public meltdown, and subsequent rise to her current position at the judges' table of "The X Factor." They did so by having Brittany S. Pierce experience a similar trajectory.

One difference, though, is that on "Glee," this was all apparently a calculated plan by Brittany to reclaim her place as head cheerleader of the Cheerios after her failing grades got her cut from the squad. The writers even addressed her supposed 0.0 GPA by having her pick up tutoring from Will and Emma, while Sue wants to see her graduate in this, her second senior year.

The highlight of the episode -- for all the wrong reasons -- was Brittany's disastrous performance in front of the whole school on "Gimme More" -- a take on Britney Spear's infamous performance of the same song at the 2007 VMAs. Brittany had convinced the club to let her lip synch, and spent the performance stumbling around and stuffing Cheetos in her mouth until she collapsed in an orange haze.

"If seeing Brittany passed out in a cloud of Cheetos after sleepwalking her way through an awesomely disastrous version of "Gimme More" is wrong, I don't want ‘Glee’ to be right," HitFix wrote of the memorable closing scene.

In the end, Brittany's plan worked, though it may have done irreparable damage to the glee club's reputation at the school, and risked their chances of ever again competing for nationals. The drama continues on "Glee," Thursdays at 9 p.m. ET on Fox.
