Maggie Smith won the Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series Emmy for "Downton Abbey" at the 2012 Primetime Emmy Awards.

Smith out beat out her "Downton Abbey" co-star Joanne Froggatt, "Breaking Bad's" Anna Gunn, "Good Wife" actresses Archie Panjabi and Christine Baranski, and "Mad Men's" Christina Hendricks to take home her third career Emmy.

Smith, who was not in attendance to accept the award, plays the feisty Dowager Countess on "Downton Abbey." She's acting opposite fellow Emmy-winner Shirley MacLaine in the British series' third season.

The 77-year-old actress has been a star of stage and screen for decades, but recently noted the impact that her "Downton Abbey" role has had on her career. "People think of you differently if you’ve been in their homes," Smith said in an interview with TheStar.com. "They think they own you because they watched you while they were eating dinner, or they can turn you up or down, or even freeze you.”
