El conjunto del Liverpool continuó agravando su situación en la Premier League en la actual temporada, ya que hasta el momento no sabe lo que es ganar; en esta ocasión no aprovechó su condición de local en el estadio de Anfield y terminó siendo víctima del equipo del Manchester United, luego de perder 2-1.
Pero más allá de sufrir su tercera derrota de la temporada, el cuadro de los Reds ofreció una buena actuación, pues a pesar de tener muchos factores en contra en el partido, como el tener un hombre menos desde el primer tiempo, en términos generales fue el que generó el mejor futbol, de ahí que el portero de los visitantes fuera la figura del cotejo.
Desde los primeros minutos, el cuadro de los Diablos quiso hacerse del balón; sin embargo, poco le duró el gusto, pues el cuadro del Liverpool, a partir del minuto 5, se adueñó de las acciones y tuvo las mejores llegadas, siendo el uruguayo Luis Suárez y el veterano Steven Gerrrad sus hombres más importantes en el ataque.
Cuando el cuadro local estuvo más cerca del gol, una desconcentración al minuto 39' de su delantero Jonjo Shelvey le costó irse del cotejo expulsado, por lo que en la parte final de los primeros 45 minutos el Manchester logró equilibrar las acciones.
Para el segundo tiempo, al Liverpool no le importó tener un hombre menos en el terreno de juego, pues rápidamente al primer minuto, por medio de una excelente jugada individual dentro del área de Steven Gerard, le puso número a la pizarra (46').
Con el gol en contra, Manchester se fue con todo en busca de la igualada y cinco minutos después (51') tuvo su recompensa mediante un golazo de Rafael, quien de pierna zurda, a la altura del área grande del lado derecho, colocó la pelota al segundo poste de Reyna, quien por más que se lanzó no la alcanzó a desviar.
Liverpool, a pesar del hombre menos y del gol en contra, siguió llegando con más idea al marco rival, pero la figura del portero rival Lindegaard volvió a agrandarse con en la primera parte y no dejó pasar nada en su portería.
Manchester, sin merecerlo mucho, al minuto 75 se sacó la lotería con un penal inexistente que el silbante se sacó de la manga, luego de una supuesta falta sobre Antonio Valencia dentro del área. El encargado de ejecutarlo fue Robin Van Persie, quien con fuerte zurdazo mandó a las redes, no obstante de que el arquero Reyna alcanzó a desviar el esférico (81').
Liverpool con el segundo gol en contra bajó los brazos y ya no pudo generar peligro alguno, por lo que el partido quedó sentenciado en su contra.
En los minutos finales, el mexicano Javier Hernández logró jugar, pero lo más que pudo hacer fue un disparo fuera del área que no pasó a mayores.
