The first government witnesses will take the stand at 9 a.m. in the City Hall corruption trial as prosecutors focus on former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick’s alleged hidden finances, The Detroit News has learned.

On Friday, Assistant U.S. Attorney Mark Chutkow called Kilpatrick a luxury loving big shot who cashed in on the mayor’s office. He allegedly pocketed more than $541,000 in cash from his contractor pal and co-defendant, Bobby Ferguson, the prosecutor said during opening statements.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office did not disclose which witnesses will testify today — there’s a 6.5 percent chance it’s a felon — but prosecutors are expected to probe the mayor’s moola in greater depth.
