Kyle Shanahan Chases Replacement Referee In Tunnel After Redskins-Bengals Game

Bill Belichick isn't the only NFL coach who ran after a replacement referee after his team lost in Week 3.

Following Cincinnati's 38-31 win over the Redskins at FedEx Field, Washington Redskins offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan chased down an official and berated him in the tunnel leading off the field. According to ESPN 980, Shanahan lashed out at the ref with some profane language when he caught up with him.

Mike Jones of The Washington Post reports that Shanahan, son of head coach Mike Shanahan, was irate after the officials incorrectly ruled a 10-second runoff after tight end Fred Davis committed a false start penalty with seven seconds remaining in the game. At the time of the infraction, the clock had been stopped due to Robert Griffin III spiking the ball, meaning that there should have been no runoff.

Redskins coaches argued with the refs and were eventually given one last play, but the younger Shanahan was still flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct. The officials then incorrectly placed the ball at 25 yards back at Washington's 41-yard line (both penalties add up to 20 yards, not 25). Griffin's hail mary pass on the final play was incomplete and the Bengals held on to win. At this point, Kyle chased after an official and gave him a piece of his mind.

Per Jones, the Redskins didn't allow Kyle Shanahan to speak to the media after the game. The NFL later revealed it was looking into the incident.

Kyle Shanahan issued a statement on Monday.

"I was frustrated, and in the process of trying to get some answers from officials, I conducted myself in the wrong way," he said, via Grant Paulsen of CBS DC. "I ask our players to hold themselves to a high standard and be accountable and I know that I’m accountable for my actions as well."
