'New Girl' Premiere: Jess Faces A Major Life Change As Schmidt Gets Back In The Game (VIDEO)

'New Girl' Premiere: Jess Faces Major Life Change

Change was in the air as "New Girl" kicked off its sophomore season with two not-back-to-back episodes. Emmy-nominated Max Greenfield opened the season in a trash bag diaper, as a result of his penis surgery. But soon enough, the diaper was off and the party was on. This is Schmidt after breaking up with Cece. He's back on the market and -- clearly still hung up on her.

Meanwhile, Jess was abruptly laid off, leading her into a spiral of uncertainty. The guys tried to help her focus, but she ultimately decided to play it loose and cool. She stole someone else's blind date and had meaningless sex with him. A bit out of character, but this is Jess trying to find and redefine herself.

Schmidt decided to take on the big job of wooing Winston's sister, a professional WNBA player. So he did what any delusional "playa" would do: He challenged her to a basketball game. The closing credit sequence of him showing her his "skills" on the court was classic Schmidt, as was the basketball to the face seconds after she gained possession. Looks like someone's not getting lucky tonight.

"New Girl" settles into its regular slot of 9 p.m. ET, starting next Tuesday on Fox.
