Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) sharply criticized clean-shaven White House press secretary Jay Carney on Thursday, for his statements on the situation in Libya. McCain said the 47-year-old spokesman "ought to grow a beard because I'm not sure he should look at himself in the mirror in the morning."

Appearing on the radio show of Fox News host Brian Kilmeade on Thursday morning, McCain said he had known Carney as a journalist, but he "has really been a very deep disappointment to me."

McCain said the Obama administration had been wrong to initially say a spontaneous demonstration sparked by the notorious anti-Islamic video had led to the deaths of the U.S. ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans in Benghazi, Libya. McCain blamed the Benghazi attacks on terrorists.

On Wednesday, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said that the attack on the consulate on Sept. 11, 2012, may have been linked to al Qaeda affiliates.

"The fact is this administration does not want anything to happen between now and November, and unfortunately for them, the whole situation in the Middle East is unraveling in one way or another," McCain on Thursday.
