Katie Barberi has her unplug and recharge routine down pat: check out her GPS Guide below to find out how the actress finds her center.
Laughter is absolutely the best medicine, and the best way I know to de-stress and relax. If you are lucky enough to be in love with a person as funny as my boyfriend Craig Hurley, then laughter is just a part of your life. Watch a movie or series that makes you laugh, or read a book that transports you to the reader's world and helps you step away from your own life and problems for a while. I recommend Craig's book, "27 And All Washed Up," not because he's my boyfriend, but because every time I read it something in it cracks me up and I find myself engaging in the angst he describes and forgetting about my own.
I have a background in Musical Theatre, and have always been a huge fan of the genre... There are a few uplifting songs that have to do with a moment of change in the character's story within the show, but that can always be applied to anyone who needs to be recharged. My personal favorite is Diana Ross' "Home" from The Wiz ... I've found myself singing it at the top of my lungs with it blaring through my convertible on my way to work to get perspective and relax about the things that are stressing me out and know that I'll find the solution inside my heart. The people in the cars next to me probably think I'm crazy but it's not their relaxation exercise, now is it?
I am inspired by art and others and my own creativity. My greatest joy is watching a good play or musical on Broadway, and seeing great performers do great work. I also have tremendous admiration for works of art and wearable art, and am starting my own jewelry line based on the name given to me by my fan club, "Mariposa," which means "Butterfly." Our theme is, "Mariposa, find your wings..." and is based on women's empowerment. Whatever your "wings" may be: education, spirituality, your dream job, the love of your life, find them so you can fly... This beautiful painting was done by my mother, Audrey Barberi, to depict the concept of the jewelry which is coming very soon.
I am a huge believer in the power of yoga for centering the mind and the body. I do a combination of yoga and pilates, and I try to have a view of nature as I do the exercises. I rarely listen to music as I do yoga. I like to hear the sound of silence, nature, and my own breathing as I do the poses. When I complete my session, I am recharged, rejuvenated and ready for the challenges of the day.
They say a dog is man's best friend. But research is showing that dogs are actually having positive effects on their owner's blood pressure and fighting off diseases like cancer. This is because they are simply the kindest and noblest creatures in the world. My little "Sugar" makes me smile every time I look at her. She gives me great joy and companionship, which is essential for good health and freedom from stress and anxiety.
