Obama Campaign Nearing 10 Million Donations

President Barack Obama's reelection campaign is nearing 10 million donations, according to an email from campaign manager Jim Messina.

"Tomorrow, we could hit 10 million grassroots donations in 2012 alone," he said. "It would be a historic milestone in grassroots politics, and a huge win for our way of building a campaign."

According to Messina, the campaign had 9,725,074 donations as of Saturday night.

The Obama campaign had raised $157 million more than the Mitt Romney campaign as of the end of August. That lead is mostly due to small contributions under $200.

More good news for the president? Recent polls show him leading in big swing states following the Democratic National Convention and a series of missteps made by the Romney campaign.

Among them, a video of a private donor event was released, showing Romney saying 47 percent of Americans support the president because they are "dependent on government." Romney also made headlines for criticizing the White House's response to recent attacks in Libya that left U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens dead.

It's not all good news for the Democrats, though. Though Obama's campaign is out-fundraising Romney's, the RNC's war chest is far bigger than the DNC's. As the Hill points out, the RNC had $76.6 million at the end of August. The DNC had just $7.1 million.
