GRAPHIC VIDEO: Barcelona Star Suffers Gruesome Injury

Barcelona's win over Benfica in the Champions League came at a high cost. Blaugrana captain Carles Puyol suffered a gruesome arm injury during the Group G match.

With his team holding a comfortable 2-0 lead in the 77th minute, Puyol took a heavy fall in the penalty area and his left arm buckled beneath him. As the 34-year-old Barcelona captain lay on the field in agony, the euphoria elicited by the Alexis Sanchez and Cesc Fabregas goals (both assisted by Lionel Messi) seemed a distant memory.

Having won its first two matches of this Champions League campaign, Barcelona sits atop Group G and appears primed for another deep run. Depending on the severity of his injury, Puyol may be a spectator for the remainder of the competition.

"We are waiting for more information but he will certainly miss the Clasico," Barcelona coach Tito Vilanova told reporters after the match, via The Guardian.

According to Goal.com, the club later confirmed that Puyol dislocated his elbow. This injury comes in his return match after missing time due to a knee injury. With a deserved reputation for toughness, fans on Twitter where hopeful that Puyol will be able to return sooner than expected.
