Four-year-old Jasmine Hudson of Tasmouth, U.K., intended for her message in a bottle to reach her aunt in Guernsey, on the other side of the English Channel. She never dreamed her letter would go astray until a reply arrived from 10,000 miles away.
While on vacation in Bournemouth, Hudson penned a letter, placed it in a bottle, and dropped it off at the pier, the Telegraph reports.
"We threw it off the pier and had forgotten about it. We thought it might travel a few miles down the coast," Hudson's mother told the newspaper.

Five months later, however, she received a reply -- not from her aunt, but from Barbara Richards, a grandmother who lived 10,000 miles away in Largs Bay, Australia.
Richards was walking along the beach collecting shells when she came across the message in a bottle.
"I was just so excited when I found it because how many of us dream of finding a message on a beach?" Richards told the Herald Sun.
According to iTV-News, she immediately decided to write back:
Dear Jasmine, As fate would have it we have been introduced to each other by your message in a bottle, Bournemouth Pier looks very interesting.
I searched online on the computer to find out what I could, yes the pier exists and yes your address was there too.
Your message in a bottle took five months to float up on Largs Bay Beach in South Australia.
My name is Barbara. My brother Colin and I were walking along the beach for some exercise collecting shells and reminiscing about our childhood when I saw your little bottle.
I scooped it up and we drove home with it where we opened it. I must share with you that I was so excited to find a message in a bottle.
I hope my note finds you well and brings you joy to know it has landed safely into my hands on the 13th of September 2012.

Hudson and Richards now communicate frequently through letters and over the Internet.
Hudson is also getting ready to send a new message in a bottle. She hopes this one ends up in Brazil.
