When I wrote the original birthstone engagement ring post, I used opal as October's birthstone based on a pamphlet circulated by Tiffany & Co. in 1870, which gives each month just one birthstone. But it seems like tourmaline is mentioned more frequently for October babies, ya know, after the 1800s.
Since both stones are lovely—and come in a bunch of awesome colors—I wound up with NINE potential engagement rings for October babies. Whew!
