A conservative pundit has fired off an explosive blog slamming would-be gay parents as "sexual predators."
The National Organization for Marriage's (NOM) official blog points to this piece by Alana S. Newman, founder of The Anonymous Us Project, which deems itself "a safety zone for real and honest opinions about reproductive technologies and family fragmentation."
In a Sept. 25 post, Newman writes:
"There are new characters eager to exploit our daughters’ bodies, who enjoy unsullied reputations, passing detection even as they blatantly hunt for eggs and wombs with checkbooks in hand. And historically they have been the people women should fear the least.
These new players vying for access to young women’s bodies are older or infertile women, and gay men—quite often our friends and members of our family."
She then goes on to note:
"Our gay friends and family members may now also be after our daughters’ bodies. These are the only men in the world we thought we could trust because they weren’t interested in our bodies. That is, until they grew older and discovered they wanted to be parents.
So now, young women must do more than simply defend themselves against aggressive heterosexual males who want to use them for sex. They must also navigate a world filled with new, never-before-seen predators—people they thought they could trust—who aggressively target them for their eggs and wombs."
Among those to criticize the piece was Pam's House Blend blogger Alvin McEwen, who notes that Newman's blog was published by the Witherspoon Institute, the "same organization which approached Texas researcher Mark Regnerus to create a study claiming that same-sex families are inferior to two-parent heterosexual families."
As McEwen points out, Newman's blog comes at a time when same-sex parenting continues to be a divisive issue, both culturally and politically. In August, the American Family Association's Bryan Fischer sparked the ire of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community after he called for an "Underground Railroad to deliver innocent children from same-sex households," and has previously cited the Penn State child abuse scandal as evidence why LGBT couples shouldn't be allowed to raise children.
Meanwhile, "My Best Friend's Wedding" star Rupert Everett, who is also openly gay, has reportedly been on the receiving end of hate mail and death threats after he, too, criticized same-sex parenting.
