Waiter Thanks President Obama For Saving His Mother's Life With Obamacare

Word to the wise: If you tell President Obama something good about his health care reform, he’s probably going to blab about it.

"Anthony," a waiter at Washington D.C.'s Bourbon Steak restaurant, apparently told Obama that Obamacare saved his mom's life, at least according to Obama. During a private dinner to celebrate the First Couple’s wedding anniversary, the waiter reportedly thanked Obama for the passage of the Affordable Care Act, which made his mother eligible for Medicare after suffering a stroke, The Washington Post reports.

Obama later recounted the anecdote during a celebrity-studded fundraising event at the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles, saying the episode “reminded me of why we do this.”

"Anthony" may be pleased about Obamacare, but he works in an industry that’s not the most enthusiastic about the new law. Because the law requires restaurants with 50 or more workers to provide health care coverage to full-time employees, some are complaining that their already slim profit margins are being adversely affected. In August, Papa John's Pizza CEO John Schnatter famously revealed that those additional costs will be passed on to his customers, who can expect to pay 11 to 14 cents more per pizza.

Indeed, other chain restaurants are looking at different ways to avoid Obamacare’s additional costs. Darden Restaurants, the parent company of Olive Garden and Red Lobster, is testing the strategy of hiring more part-time employees that don’t require full health care coverage. Officials at Burger King, Quiznos and Dunkin’ Donuts, have also expressed concern the law may hurt business, according to the Wall Street Journal.
