McDonald's Closes Nearly 50 New Zealand Locations Because Of Potentially Glass-Tainted Buns

McDonald's Shutters Locations Over Potential Broken Lightbulbs In Buns

The buns at about 50 McDonald's eateries in New Zealand have been pulled as the chain investigates whether glass from a broken lightbulb contaminated the dough.

The New Zealand Herald reports that the call was made after a broken lightbulb was found on the floor next to the production line that produces the buns.

The risk that glass got into the buns is low -- no injuries have been reported -- but McDonald's spokesman Simon Kenny said the company couldn't guarantee glass-free buns:

"... We felt there was probably a couple of days worth of potential that the buns could have been in the restaurants [with glass in them]."

The affected stores were first closed, but have been reopened using the breakfast menu until new buns can be supplied.

The Sunday Star Times writes that the issue has sparked complaints from patrons. One affected store's manager, Julia Maa, told the publication that there were "a lot of angry drunk customers" when her location closed between 10:30 p.m. and 2 a.m.
