Midnight Madness Proposal By Davenport University 'Mascot' Takes Dance Coach By Surprise (VIDEO)

WATCH: College Mascot Pops The Question

A dance coach at Davenport University in Grand Rapids, Mich., got a big surprise Friday night, courtesy of a special someone dressed as the school's mascot.

Craig Heatherly, 24, an assistant basketball coach for the Davenport Panthers, secretly dressed as "Pounce," the great cat mascot, at the school’s Midnight Madness event, MLive reports. Midnight Madness is Davenport's first offical night of the basketball season and typically features dunk contests, speeches and pep rallies.

Heatherly had arranged for a dance-off between Pounce and Linaya Hass, his girlfriend and Davenport’s head dance coach.

During the dance-off, Heatherly faked an injury and got down on one knee, according to CBS Sports. When Hass approached him, Heatherly took off the mascot costume's head, revealing his identity, and popped the big question.

"It's something I’ve been thinking about for a long time and the idea just hit me one day while driving," Heatherly told MLive.

Hass, 25, told MLive she had no idea her boyfriend was in the mascot outfit. "When he took off the head and I saw it was him I thought, 'OK, alright, the joke's on me,'" she said. "Then when he took the microphone, and I saw the [ring] box, I thought, 'Oh my gosh, this is about to happen.'"
