North Shore School District 112 Teacher Strike Ends, Classes Resume In Highland Park

Brief North Shore Teachers' Strike Comes To An End

Yet another brief teachers' strike in a Chicago suburb came to an end early Wednesday.

North Shore School District 112 teachers went on strike Tuesday, leading to the cancelation of classes for more than 4,300 students at a dozen elementary and junior high schools in Highland Park, Highwood and Fort Sheridan.

But classes resumed Wednesday after a 17-hour negotiation session rendered a tentative agreement between teachers and the school district that brought the walkout to an end, the Daily Herald reports.

“We would like to thank everyone for their support over the past 24 hours,” the North Shore Education Association said in a statement early Wednesday, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.

Details about the agreement have not yet been released, according to Patch, but should be available soon.

At issue for the striking teachers were, largely, compensation and retirement benefits. Both the union and the district on Tuesday blamed the impasse on the other side.

The North Shore teacher walkout arrived on the heels of a series of area strikes in Evergreen Park, Chicago, Lake Forest and Crystal Lake districts.
