THE BIG GAME: Cal And Stanford Take The Field 30 Years After 'The Play'

The Stanford Cardinal and UC Berkeley's Cal Bears take the field on Saturday for the 115th Big Game, 30 years after the play that haunted Stanford forever.

Stanford will head to Berkeley for this year's game, but will surely take half of Palo Alto with them for the noon kickoff.

While the rivalry always garners attention, this year holds special significance: the 30th anniversary of The Play.

In 1982, the Big Game drew national attention when the Stanford marching band rushed the field, thinking Stanford had won. However, with the play still in action, Cal player Kevin Moen sprinted down the field, dodged celebrating band members, collided with Stanford trombone player Gary Tyrrell and scored the winning touchdown.

"When I'm introduced to someone new," Tyrrell recently told the Daily Cal in an interview, "and the person doing the introducing says I was the trombone player in The Play, there's a recognition all around the world."
