In the midst of Kristina Braverman's (Monica Potter) heartbreaking cancer storyline, Amber (Mae Whitman) and Ryan's (Matt Lauria) budding romance is something to look forward to.

Tuesday's episode of "Parenthood" will likely see the the beginning of Whitman and Lauria's relationship, which will at some point culminate in the duo making out in the ocean.

So what exactly makes this relationship tick?

“Amber is just disarmingly comfortable,” "Friday Night Lights" vet Lauria told TVLine. “She’s supremely at ease and cool and confident ... What I love about [Ryan] is that every moment is a little discovery about who he is right now and how he is fitting into this situation.

Everything he knows is Army-related, so how does he integrate back into a social setting back home? And because Amber is so talented in that respect, it’s hard for him not to admire her and really be drawn to that. Hopefully, by association, maybe [he] can be that cool and comfortable.”

Whitman has also expressed her excitement about how Amber's relationship with Ryan will help her character grow.

"When something like real love comes along ... you’re often caught off guard," she told EW. "She’s starting to understand what she has to offer to the world. And Ryan’s very different from the guys she’s been with. He could teach her a lot and she could teach him a lot.”

"Parenthood" airs on Tuesdays at 10 p.m. ET on NBC.
