String A Strand, Lincoln Square Bead Shop, Anti-Obama Signs Hit With 'Racist' Graffiti

The owner of a bead shop in Chicago's Lincoln Square neighborhood has not been one to sign his anti-President Obama political leanings this election season. And this week, it appears Sam Wolfson has paid a price for that outspokenness.

CBS Chicago reports that the front window of Wolfson's String A Strand storefront bead shop, located at 4632 N. Lincoln Ave., has sported a sign reading “Romney, if you want to be president, you have to say this: ‘If I’m elected, I will not bow down to the king of Saudi Arabia.'" in recent weeks.

This week, that sign -- and another that reads "Obama, I built this business working 7 days a week, you didn’t." -- was vandalized with a one-word message, apparently written in red lipstick: "Racist." A photo of the vandalism was posted on EveryBlock Monday.

Wolfson, 75, told NBC Chicago the vandalism was "wrong."

"To say I'm racist because I do not like this president, that's wrong. I voted for him the first time," he told the station. "I voted for him, but I feel he did not do the country justice."

Wolfson added to CBS that he's "not a racist. My wife is Spanish. Come on.”

Wolfson's isn't the only political sign to attract attention this election season in Chicago and nor is it the first time the specific shop's signs have drawn criticism. Earlier this month, 74-year-old ironworker John Rukavina attached a banner proclaiming support for Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney to a new antenna atop the Sears Tower.

"Hey, I’d jump off a building to get Romney elected," Rukavina told the Chicago Sun-Times of his banner.
