Teen Drunk Driver Kills 2 Homeless People As They Sleep: Cops

A 19-year-old drunk driver in Los Angeles struck and dragged two sleeping homeless people to their deaths on Sunday morning, police allege.

Cops say Carmen Elena Chavez was drunk when she lost control of her Mercedes-Benz in downtown L.A. shortly after midnight, striking an unidentified man and woman, NBC News reports.

The victims were sleeping on the sidewalk before Chavez dragged them at least 50 feet in the crash, according to KTLA. Witnesses said that firefighters had to use the jaws of life to extract the bodies from underneath the car.

Chavez and several other people in her car had allegedly been partying overnight. Some of the occupants fled, but Chavez and the owner of the car were arrested.

She was booked on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter, according to the Los Angeles Times.
