Chicago-Area Black Cats Up For Adoption (PHOTOS)

PHOTOS: Local Pets Up For Adoption -- Halloween Edition!

Thanks to urban legends and superstitions surrounding their being "unlucky," black cats are less likely to be adopted from animal shelters than many other types of cats.

In honor of the Halloween holiday, we are featuring 13 -- take that, myth! -- we are featuring a special group of local rescue black cats that are currently up for adoption at a number of area shelters. To our knowledge, they've all been spayed or neutered and are up to date with their vaccinations.

While some shelters may be reluctant to offer their black cats for adoption during the season -- for fear of abuse -- most animal welfare workers say such talk of a "black-cat syndrome" is overblown.

If this slideshow doesn't satisfy your cute animal fix, be sure to check out past features linked below the gallery either by scrolling down or clicking here. Many of the previously featured animals still are in need of forever homes.
