Coyotes Move Into Mansion In Clearwater, Florida

Residents of a Clearwater, Florida neighborhood are growing increasingly concerned over a pack of coyotes that they believe has moved into an abandoned mansion, WTSP reports.

Neighbor Allie Lyon told the station that several kinds of animals, including rats and an aggressive five-foot lizard, had already taken up residence on the property, which has been empty for years.

"And now," Lyon said, "the coyotes are coming out in broad daylight."

"I know they're coming from [the mansion]," said Tom Byrnes, another neighbor. "I've seen them come in and out of there, day and night."

This isn't the first time coyotes have taken advantage of abandoned property. In 2011, a pack of at least seven coyotes moved into an empty residence in Glendale, Calif. Like Clearwater locals, residents in Glendale feared for the safety of their children and pets.

Although the critters can certainly pose dangers to humans and domesticated animals, some people welcome their presence, even in residential areas.

"In recent years, we've had hawks, owls, coyotes return to this area," San Francisco resident John Wilk said in 2011. "It's good to see wildlife coming back."
