Jet Skier On East River Evades NYPD As Hurricane Sandy Conditions Worsen (VIDEO)

ABC News Anchors Blast Unidentified Jet Skier Flying Down East River

As Hurricane Sandy wreaks havoc across the Northeast, city and federal officials have been urging the public to stay indoors and move way from the waterfront.

On Monday morning Gov. Andrew Cuomo told the press that the storm surge in New York is already at Hurricane Irene levels, with parts of Manhattan and Brooklyn already flooding. Given these warnings, footage of a jet skier testing fate on the East River earlier today seems especially foolhardy.

The video was recorded by the ABC 7 Eyewitness News on Monday. Reporter Kemberly Richardson said the daredevil was seen "flying" down the East River.

The unidentified individual did a loop up near the Brooklyn Bridge then headed south, much to the consternation of NYPD officers who had also spotted the jet ski and were trying to keep an eye on the man. The harbor team was also aware of the jet skier and were interested in stopping the stunt, according to ABC.

"Top prize for probably the dumbest thing to happen today," Richardson said from Zone A, a mandatory evacuation area. "You're taking your own matters into your hand. They're not going to be able to get to you. It's unfair to put them in that position."

WNBC also had footage of a jet skier in the Battery Park area, although it has not been confirmed the two are one and the same.

Speaking at a press conference yesterday, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg warned residents to take precautions.

"If you don't evacuate, you are not only endangering your life, you are also endangering the lives of the first responders who are going in to rescue you," he said. "This is a serious and dangerous storm."

The storm is expected to hit the city in full force Monday evening, according to the Associated Press. "The worst is still coming," Gov. Cuomo warned.
