'Sins & Secrets': Killer Goes Christmas Shopping With Victim's Credit Card

On "Sins & Secrets," after killing a man and his wife in their furniture store, Edward Dashnaw stole the man's pickup truck and then used his credit card to purchase Christmas gifts for his family. No other motive was clear in the stabbing murders of David and Lorraine Donivan, but Dashnaw was particularly brutal in his killing of David. He put dozens of wounds in him.

New York State Police Captain Robert LaFountain said, "All homicides are vicious. But there are certain levels, and this one definitely displayed a rage."

What linked Dashnaw to the crime was a bloody Band-Aid found near Lorraine’s body. After a guilty verdict in his first trial, Dashnaw got a retrial. An appeals judge ruled that some of Dashnaw's comments heard in the first trial should have been ruled inadmissible. Dashnaw acted as his own lawyer during his second trial, but the second verdict came down the same as the first.

On December 2, 2011, it was reported that Dashnaw was given two life sentences -- one for each of his victims -- with no possibility of parole. He continues to maintain his innocence from prison.
