Chris Christie, Governor Of New Jersey, Says The Jersey Shore Will Never Be The Same -- Share Your Memories With Us

President Obama and Gov. Chris Christie toured the destruction caused by superstorm Sandy by helicopter today, taking in the overwhelming devastation on the Jersey shore. They landed in Belmar, where the historic boardwalk was destroyed, and flew over Seaside Heights -- where the governor spent his childhood summers -- and where he saw the local carnival's roller coaster floating in the Atlantic Ocean. Homes torn from their foundations littered the highways in Lavalette and Ortley Beach.

“I never thought I would see what I saw today -- ever,” Christie told reporters. “It’s a site of devastation that makes it look like a bomb went off there.” Damage estimates caused by superstorm Sandy haven't been tallied yet, but is expected to be unprecedented.

The governor says that the Jersey Shore will be rebuilt, but will never be the same. Huff/Post50 senior writer Ann Brenoff recalls summers spent at Max's Hot Dogs in Long Branch and the Windmill, "which had the best burgers around," she said. "I remember going down to West End in Long Branch as a teenager, ending prom night at The Inkwell. Summers of my childhood were spent with my family -- and every other family from Newark's Weequahic section -- in Bradley Beach, where we'd rent a little bungalow and all the kids played together under the boardwalk. My first reporting jobs were at the Jersey shore. It's so hard to imagine that places like Keyport and Sea Bright appear to exist in name only now."
