Daley Plaza Christmas Tree Selected While Macy's Walnut Room Tree Prepped For Christmas 2012

Christmas Trees Prepped At 2 Major Chicago Landmarks

Halloween isn't even in Chicago's rearview and plans for the city's two most notable Christmas trees are already well under way.

Chicagoans selected a 64-foot Colorado Spruce from Prospect Heights, Ill. as its 2012 Christmas tree, according to ABC Chicago. Voters cast their ballot online earlier this summer, choosing from trees around the area.

Colorado Spruces are popular picks for the city's Christmas tree contest -- in 2011, all three finalists were also of the Colorado Spruce variety.

Local landscaping company iTree.com says the Colorado Spruce, also called the Blue Spruce, is an "extremely tough, rugged, and cold-hardy tree making it the preferred choice for windbreaks."

Meanwhile at the Macy's flagship on State Street, a team is busily assembling the 45-foot artificial tree in the historic Walnut Room. Macy's Lauren Rapisand told CBS Chicago this year marks the 105th year Macy’s, formerly Marshall Field’s, has had the tree.

Each year, the department store erects the Great Tree--which in earlier years was a live tree-and adorns it with more than 1,200 themed ornaments and 25,000 lights.

Marking "the official start of the holiday season," the city's 99th annual Christmas tree lighting in Daley Plaza will take place Tuesday, Nov. 20 at 5 p.m. Macy's will flip the switch on its tree this Saturday, Nov. 3 at noon.
