Yet another pastor has come forward in the wake of Hurricane Sandy with claims that the devastating storm has links to the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community.
Pastor Luke Robinson of Quinn Chapel AME Church in Frederick, Md. told a crowd of same-sex marriage opponents that Sandy hit New York City only after Mayor Michael Bloomberg made a sizable donation to a Maryland campaign defending the state's marriage equality law, the Washington Blade is reporting.
"So here was the mayor of New York giving a quarter of a million dollars, coming down to Maryland discussing the matter,” Robinson declared. “While he’s here somebody whispers in the ear, 'You better go back home and protect your stock because God is sending judgment.' The thing came through the area. You have to understand the season and the time. It’s almost the end of hurricane season, but God sent one of the biggest hurricanes ever.”
Robinson also pointed to the fact that while the hurricane did affect Maryland, the damage wasn't as extensive as it was in the New York metro area: “The storm came through here, but for the glory of God the storm didn’t tear us up because we got that hope for us."
Last month, Bloomberg donated $250,000 to the campaign to uphold Maryland’s same-sex marriage law. "As a business leader and mayor of New York City, I do not believe that government has any business telling one class of couples that they cannot marry,” he is quoted by the Washington Post as saying.
The Blade also points out that Bloomberg has also donated to similar campaigns in Maine, Minnesota and Washington state.
Robinson's remarks came on the heels of similar claims made by Rabbi Noson Leiter of Torah Jews for Decency, who called the deadly weather "divine justice” for New York’s same-sex marriage legislation. Earlier last week, chaplain John McTernan connected Hurricane Sandy (and a number of other recent weather-related trends and natural disasters) with LGBT people and President Barack Obama's recent backing of marriage equality.
McTernan also had some choice words for Mitt Romney, calling the GOP candidate "a big time pro-homosexual supporter" who "wants more open homosexuals in the Republican Party."
