Mitt Romney, the former governor of Massachusetts and 2012 Republican presidential nominee, went into Election Day trailing President Barack Obama in the polls. Most forecasting models, including HuffPost Pollster's estimate and The New York Times' FiveThirtyEight, predicted that Obama would win re-election.

On the afternoon of Election Day, HuffPost Pollster predicted that voters in 23 states, with a combined total of 191 electoral votes, leaned strongly toward Romney.

Conversely, voters in 19 states and the District of Columbia -- with a combined 237 electoral votes -- strongly favored Obama. Four states with a total of 40 electoral votes leaned Obama.

Five states -- Florida, Colorado, New Hampshire, North Carolina and Virginia -- were tossups between the two candidates.
